The Tale Spinner is an ‘un-AI-able’ immersive peepshow- a 3D comic that literally revolves around the viewer’s head. Since I first performed it it has provoked some of the strongest responses to any artwork I have created. You can watch some of them here:

 

Its conception began when I was awarded a ‘Develop Your Creative Practice’ Arts Council England grant to research and develop a performed comic that can’t be replicated by Al. This 3D comic engaged audiences ‘In Real Life’ (IRL) without a screen between them and the art, centralising the human experience. 

To create something AI-proof I went back in history to before screens started to consume our attention. All the way back to pre-cinema storytelling and peep shows from the 18th-19th century. But I also drew inspiration from the modern world’s immersive and interactive digital visual stories, from VR to gaming and AI. 

Inside my story telling machine I spin a story about global warming, AI, pricked fingers, motherhood, ghosts in nurseries and our fear of an unknown future.

I have performed The Tale Spinner for The Royal Society of Literature, twice at The British Library, at Thought Bubble- the UK’s largest comics festival and at Brockwell Hall family festival. If you’re interested in me performing it at your event get in touch.
